Pray Big Prayers to a Big God: The Bold Prayer of Jabez

A Powerful Prayer Hidden in a Genealogy

Some of the most profound spiritual moments in Scripture are easy to overlook. Tucked in the middle of a long genealogy in 1 Chronicles is a short, two-verse prayer from a man named Jabez.

And it changes everything.

In just a few lines, Jabez shows us what bold faith-filled prayer looks like—and how God responds when we dare to ask big things from a big God.

“Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, ‘I gave birth to him in pain.’ Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.”  1 Chronicles 4:9–10 (NIV)

What We Learn from the Prayer of Jabez

Jabez’s prayer includes four specific, God-honoring requests—and they can reshape how you approach your own time with God.

1. “Oh, That You Would Bless Me”

Jabez begins where many of us hesitate: asking for God’s blessing.

This isn’t selfish ambition. It’s a heart that recognizes every good thing comes from God (James 1:17). Jabez isn’t demanding—he’s depending.

There should be no reluctance to ask God to bless your life—when your heart desires to use that blessing for His glory.

2. “Enlarge My Territory”

This isn’t about land—it’s about influence, opportunity, and impact.

Jabez wanted to grow, to make a difference, to live out God’s purposes more fully. That’s a bold prayer!

We often settle for small prayers because we think small. But the God we serve is not small. He’s the Creator of the universe.

“You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive because you ask with wrong motives…” James 4:2–3 (NIV)

Jabez asked with the right heart—and God responded.

3. “Let Your Hand Be With Me”

Jabez didn’t want more without God’s presence.

Like Moses, he was saying, if You’re not going with me, I’m not going. (Exodus 33:15)

Success without God is empty. Jabez prayed for guidance and strength in whatever God called him to do.

4. “Keep Me From Harm So That I Will Be Free from Pain”

His name, Jabez, meant pain. But he didn’t want to live under that label.

This part of his prayer shows us that we can ask God for freedom from what’s behind us—past pain, fear, failure, even family baggage.

You’re not stuck with your reputation, your past, or your limitations. You serve a God who redeems and restores.

The Most Powerful Line? “And God Granted His Request.”

No conditions. No qualifications. Just a simple, stunning response:

“And God granted his request.”

That’s the kind of God we serve:
✓ A God who listens.
✓ A God who blesses.
✓ A God who answers bold, faith-filled prayers.

Pray Big Because God Is Big

Here’s the challenge: Stop playing small. Start praying boldly.

Don’t ask for more stuff. Ask for:

  • more blessing for His glory,
  • more opportunity to serve,
  • more of God’s presence, and
  • more protection from anything that limits you.

Ask like Jabez—with boldness, humility, and faith.
Trust like Jabez—that the God who answered him can answer you.
