Pursuing and Seeking God: A Life That Draws Near to Him
Many people believe in God. Yet the Bible calls believers to something deeper than belief. Scripture calls us to seek God. Seeking God means pursuing Him intentionally. It means wanting to know Him, trust Him, and shape our lives around His truth.
God designed human life with this purpose in mind. Acts 17:27 explains that God arranged the world so that people would seek Him and reach out for Him. A growing relationship with God rarely happens by accident. It grows when we choose to pursue Him with our hearts, our minds, and our daily decisions.
The Blessing of Seeking God
The Bible repeatedly connects seeking God with spiritual growth and deeper understanding. David expresses this desire clearly: “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you.” (Psalm 63:1 NIV)
Seeking God draws us into a closer relationship with Him. His presence brings clarity when life feels uncertain. His truth strengthens us when challenges arise.
Scripture also reminds us that God responds to those who pursue Him. Psalm 9:10 teaches that those who know God’s name trust Him because the Lord never forsakes those who seek Him.
When we seek God, our perspective begins to change. Our priorities shift. Our decisions reflect wisdom rather than impulse. A life that seeks God grows stronger because it rests on His guidance.
How Do We Seek God?
Seeking God is not complicated, but it does require intention. Jesus gave a clear instruction: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33 NIV)
Seeking God begins by placing Him first in our lives. We seek God through Scripture. His Word reveals His character, His promises, and His direction for life.
We seek God through prayer. Prayer draws us into conversation with Him and teaches us to depend on His wisdom. Seeking God also means choosing to follow His truth in everyday decisions. A life that continually turns toward God grows steadily in faith and understanding.
Hindrances That Can Pull Us Away
If seeking God brings such blessing, why do people struggle with it? Often the greatest obstacle is distraction. Life quickly fills with responsibilities, concerns, and constant activity. Without intention, our attention shifts toward temporary matters rather than eternal ones.
Another hindrance is misunderstanding. Some people assume that God is distant or uninterested in their lives. Scripture teaches the opposite. God desires to be known by those who pursue Him. Proverbs 28:5 explains that those who seek the Lord understand what is right.
When we seek God, His wisdom begins shaping our thinking and guiding our choices.
A Life That Pursues God
Seeking God is not reserved for pastors or spiritual leaders. It is the calling of every believer. A life that seeks God begins with a simple decision: to pursue Him intentionally. That pursuit may include quiet time in prayer, reading Scripture with reflection, or asking God for guidance throughout the day.
As believers develop this habit, something powerful begins to happen. Our relationship with God deepens, and His presence becomes more evident in our lives. The more we seek Him, the more clearly we recognize His work around us. God is not distant from those who pursue Him. He welcomes those who seek Him sincerely.
Reflection
Consider these questions:
- Are you intentionally seeking God in your daily life?
- What practices help you draw closer to Him?
- What distractions may be pulling your attention away from Him?
Seeking God is not about perfection. It is about direction. When we pursue Him sincerely, He faithfully draws near. A genuine relationship with God grows when we intentionally pursue Him through faith, prayer, and obedience. Seeking God is not simply an occasional activity. It is the foundation of a growing walk with Him.
Next Week
Next week’s post explores another central teaching of Jesus: Loving One Another. Jesus taught that love would identify His followers. We will examine what this command means and how believers can live it out in everyday life.
Until then, continue pursuing wisdom and walking faithfully with God. Get Wisdom and Pursue Truth,
Steve
