God Is Not Looking for Ability—He Is Looking for Availability
Many believers quietly wonder whether God can truly use them. They may feel unprepared, uncertain, or unqualified. They assume spiritual growth or meaningful service is reserved for those who seem more gifted, confident, or experienced. But Scripture consistently points in a different direction. God is not first looking for ability. He is looking for availability.
Being available to God begins with a willing heart.
Availability Begins With Willingness
The Christian life is not about waiting until we feel ready. It is about responding when God calls. Paul urges believers: “Live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” (Ephesians 4:1 NIV)
This calling is not limited to a select few. Every follower of Jesus is invited to walk with Him, grow in Him, and reflect Him. Availability does not mean having everything figured out. It means being willing to take the next faithful step.
God works through those who are open to His leading.
Being Available Is a Daily Choice
Availability is not a one-time decision. It is a daily posture of openness and obedience. Paul writes: “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” (Philippians 1:27)
Being available to God shows up in ordinary moments. It shapes how we respond to people, how we use our time, and how we remain teachable. Each day brings opportunities to say yes to God’s work in us and through us.
Spiritual growth begins when willingness becomes a habit.
God Transforms Those Who Remain Available
Availability invites transformation. Paul prayed that believers would grow and mature in their walk with Christ: “So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” (Colossians 1:10)
God does not ask us to transform ourselves. He does that work as we remain open to Him. As we grow in understanding and obedience, our lives begin to reflect His purposes more clearly.
Transformation is often gradual, but it is always intentional.
Availability Comes Before Fruitfulness
Many people want to be fruitful, but hesitate to be available. Scripture shows that fruitfulness flows from willingness. When we remain open to God’s direction, He shapes our character, deepens our faith, and prepares us for meaningful service. Availability allows God to work beneath the surface before producing visible results.
A willing heart becomes fertile ground for spiritual growth.
What This Means for Us Today
Being available to God does not require special qualifications. It requires openness. It means inviting God into your daily life. It means remaining teachable. It means trusting that God is at work, even when progress feels slow. God often does His greatest work in ordinary people who simply say yes.
Reflection and Application
- In what area of your life is God inviting you to be more available?
- What fears or assumptions may be holding you back from saying yes?
- How can you intentionally remain open to God’s transforming work this week?
In The Relationship Characteristics of a Jesus Follower: Are You Right With God?, Lesson 3 explores what it means to live with openness and responsiveness to God’s work in your life.

Until next time—get wisdom and pursue truth. Blessings,
