Will You Be Prepared, Living Ready for Christ’s Coming?
When Preparation Really Matters
Few things in life carry higher stakes than being ready for what truly matters. We prepare for exams, weddings, and careers—but Jesus told a story about preparation that determines eternity. In Matthew 25:1-13, the parable of the ten virgins challenges every believer to consider: Are you ready for His return?
Five virgins were wise, bringing oil for their lamps; five were foolish, neglecting to prepare. When the bridegroom arrived, the unprepared were shut out of the feast. “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” (Matthew 25:13 NIV)
This parable is not simply about lamps and oil—it’s about the heart. It’s about spiritual readiness grounded in a living relationship with Christ.
Knowing About Jesus Isn’t the Same as Knowing Him
Jesus warned in Matthew 7:21-23 that not everyone who says, “Lord, Lord,” will enter His kingdom—only those who truly know Him and do the Father’s will.
It’s possible to look faithful outwardly—attend church, serve, even teach—yet still miss the inner relationship that gives spiritual life.
In Scripture, oil often symbolizes the presence and power of the Holy Spirit (1 Samuel 16:13; Zechariah 4:1-6). The wise virgins’ oil represents that living presence of God within—the Spirit who keeps our faith alive and our hearts burning with love for Christ. Without that inner reality, our lamp may shine briefly but will not endure the darkness.
Take Responsibility for Your Faith
Notice the wise virgins could not share their oil. Spiritual readiness cannot be borrowed, inherited, or delegated. Each believer must take personal responsibility for their walk with God. Your pastor, spouse, or parents cannot fill your lamp—you must know Christ yourself.
Readiness means nurturing a living faith, not merely holding a belief. It involves daily obedience, repentance, prayer, and trust. The wise stay watchful not from fear but from love—because they long to see the Bridegroom face to face.
What Gets in the Way
So many things distract believers from true relationship—busyness, complacency, and the illusion of control. We become consumed with temporary tasks and forget eternal priorities. Jesus calls us to re-center life around Him—to keep our lamps trimmed and burning brightly through His Word and Spirit.
Ask yourself:
- Am I cultivating intimacy with Christ through prayer and obedience?
- Do I depend on His Spirit or on my own strength?
- Is my hope grounded in Him or in what this world offers?
Living Ready Every Day
Spiritual readiness isn’t anxiety—it’s anticipation. The wise are not fearful of Christ’s coming; they are filled with hope. Preparation means living faithfully now, walking closely with Him, and letting His light shine through you every day.
When the Bridegroom comes, those who know Him will enter the joy of His presence forever. Until then, our call is simple: stay awake, stay filled, and stay faithful.
Reflection Questions
- What does your “oil supply” look like—are you drawing strength from the Holy Spirit daily?
- How can you keep your relationship with Christ vibrant in the busyness of life?
Key Thought: True readiness is not about activity but intimacy—with Christ at the center.
