If Jesus Was God, Why Did He Need to Pray?

Many people assume that prayer is mainly for people who are weak, confused, or in need of help. If that’s true, then why did Jesus pray so often?

Jesus was the Son of God. He possessed all authority and perfect wisdom. Yet throughout His earthly ministry, He repeatedly withdrew to spend time alone with His Father. If anyone could have lived without prayer, it was Jesus. Instead, He made prayer one of the highest priorities of His life.

Jesus Showed Us the Importance of Prayer

The Gospels reveal that Jesus prayed before major decisions, during times of intense pressure, and when He needed time alone with the Father. Mark 1:35 tells us that Jesus rose early in the morning, found a solitary place, and prayed. Before choosing His twelve disciples, He spent the night in prayer (Luke 6:12). In the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed for strength to obey the Father’s will (Matthew 26:39).

Jesus didn’t pray because He lacked power. He prayed because His relationship with the Father was central to everything He did. His example reminds us that prayer is not a sign of weakness—it is an expression of dependence, trust, and fellowship with God.

Follow the Example of Jesus

If Jesus considered prayer essential, shouldn’t we?

Prayer is more than bringing requests to God. It is how we grow in dependence on Him, seek His wisdom, and align our hearts with His will. The more we follow Jesus’ example, the more we discover that prayer is not simply another spiritual discipline, it is one of God’s greatest gifts.

This week, spend a few extra minutes with the Lord. Don’t begin with a list of requests. Begin by thanking Him for His love and asking Him to help you know Him more deeply.

If prayer was essential for Jesus, it is essential for us.
