How Do I Know If Worldly Values Are Influencing Me?
Many Christians hear the warning “Do not love the world” and think primarily about avoiding obviously sinful behavior. But worldly values can influence us in much subtler ways. Without realizing it, we can begin measuring a successful life by money, recognition, comfort, control, or what other people think of us.
None of those things is necessarily wrong. The danger comes when they become more important than faithfully following God.
What Is Shaping Your Definition of Success?
Scripture warns: “Do not love the world or anything in the world.” (1 John 2:15) Why such a strong warning? Because what we value eventually shapes what we pursue.
If success means having more, we will pursue more. If success means approval, we will adjust ourselves to please others. If comfort becomes essential, obedience to God may become negotiable whenever following Him becomes difficult.
The world’s values can quietly become our values. That’s why resisting worldly values begins with recognizing them.
Ask Yourself One Honest Question
Think about something you strongly desire right now—a goal, achievement, possession, lifestyle, or someone’s approval. Then ask: Why is this so important to me?
Is it important because it reflects what God values? Or have you simply absorbed the message that this is what a successful life should look like? You don’t need to withdraw from the world to faithfully follow Jesus. But you do need to recognize when the world’s priorities are competing for your heart.
Ask God to show you any value that is quietly drawing you away from Him. Then choose what matters most. The goal isn’t simply to reject the world. It’s to value what God values.
