Knowing God
Many people know facts about God. They may attend church, read the Bible occasionally, or identify as Christians. Yet Jesus made it clear that knowing about God is not the same as truly knowing Him. That difference matters more than many people realize.
God does not call believers into a distant religion built only on information or rituals. He invites them into a real relationship with Him. Christianity is not simply learning doctrines or following traditions. It is walking with God personally, loving Him sincerely, and allowing Him to transform everyday life.
That is why knowing God is at the center of the Christian life.
Eternal Life Begins with Knowing God
Paul expressed the desire of his heart when he wrote: “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings.” — Philippians 3:10
Paul already believed in Jesus, yet he still longed to know Him more deeply. A healthy relationship with God continues to grow throughout life. Jesus made an even stronger statement in John 17: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” — John 17:3
Eternal life is not only about heaven someday. It begins now through a genuine relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Scripture also teaches that knowing God changes the way believers live. First John 2:3 says that believers know they have come to know Him if they keep His commands. Obedience does not earn salvation, but it reflects a real relationship with God.
Jesus gave a serious warning in Matthew 7:21-23 about people who practiced religious activity without truly knowing Him. The issue was not outward appearance alone. The issue was relationship.
Knowing God Changes Everyday Life
Knowing God grows through prayer, Scripture, obedience, worship, and daily fellowship with Him. As believers draw closer to God, they begin reflecting His character more consistently. First John 4:8 reminds believers that “God is love.” A genuine relationship with God should produce growing love, humility, compassion, and spiritual maturity.
Knowing God also means understanding that He fully knows us. Nothing is hidden from Him. Yet through grace, He still invites believers into close fellowship with Him.
That truth should encourage every Christian. God does not wait for perfection before relationship. He calls people to come honestly, trust Him fully, and continue growing faithfully. A growing relationship with God affects attitudes, priorities, decisions, and relationships. It changes the way believers think, speak, and live.
A Relationship That Continues to Grow
No believer knows God perfectly. Every Christian is still growing in faith and understanding. But the desire to know God more deeply should remain active throughout life. Today is a good opportunity to ask an important question: Am I simply learning about God, or am I truly walking with Him?
God invites believers into a living relationship that transforms both eternity and everyday life.
Next week we will explore Ephesians 4:25 and the importance of speaking truth to one another.
Until next time — get wisdom and pursue truth.
Blessings, Steve
